New Year means new fashion trends. As we have finally stepped into 2021, it’s time to make some fashion predictions. Obviously, the pandemic has been influencing our fashion choices last year. Due to working from home, we’ve replaced our workwear with loungewear and our pumps with slippers. To be honest, at this point, I am so fed up with loungewear, that even a thought of being able to wear proper clothes again (hopefully, very soon!) is the one that warms my heart deeply.

While the world was pretty much set on pause during 2020, the fashion shows still went on, but this time, virtually. Lots of designers have live-streamed their runways without audiences to give us an insight of what 2021 might look like. I must admit, looking at the Spring/Summer 2021 collections made me feel really optimistic. You could really notice that this time the focus was on the message of the items. Many of these pieces were created during lockdowns for the post-lockdown World. Of course, the lockdowns didn’t go unnoticed. We can clearly see that the pandemic had its influence on the S/S 2021 collections, as many designers have put emphasis on comfort. However, luckily, comfort isn’t the only trend for 2021. In fact, while watching the S/S 21 runways, I’ve highlighted several 2021 fashion trends that I’d like to add to my closet. Today I would like to share them with you. Curious to learn what are the top fashion trends for 2021? Keep scrolling!

1. Cut-Out Dresses

After wearing over-sized loungewear for months, showing off some skin feels like a necessity. Like, will we get to wear party clothes in 2021? Let’s imagine that we are able to go out again. Actually, designers have imagined that already. I must admit that for 2021 designers have uncovered some unexpected ways to reveal certain body parts. S/S 2021 runways were flooded with cut-out clothes. Everything from cut-out turtlenecks to dresses. However, across the collections, I have noticed one common thing. For S/S 21, many designers have chosen to play with the idea of a “naked dress”. May I introduce you to a “slinky little black dress”! Seen on S/S 21 runways of Jacquemus, Khaite, Victoria Beckham and others, the slinky little black dress is set to become your new party wardrobe staple.

2. Power Shoulders & Volume Sleeves

One thing that many of us have realized during lockdowns is that it’s totally normal to dress head-to-waist rather than the usual head-to-toe. Perhaps, that’s the reason why so many designers have chosen to focus on the waist up for S/S 2021. Obviously, Zoom calls are still going to remain a thing in 2021. So, why not make them fashion? Puff sleeves have been trending for several seasons now. Not only will they remain trending in S/S 2021, but this season, puff sleeves are about to gain even more volume! However, it seems like focusing on the sleeves alone was way too boring for designers, so they’ve chosen to play around with shoulders too! If you watched the S/S 2021 fashion shows, there is no way you haven’t noticed the return of power shoulders! The most dramatic versions of power shoulders were noticed at Balenciaga, Balmain and Rick Owens. Other designers, incl. Richard Malone and Maison Margiela are offering a softer take on a silhouette, just perfect for those Zoom calls!

3. Wide-leg Denim

Bored with sweatpants? In S/S 2021 it’s time to upgrade them for a pair of loose-fit, wide-leg denim. We’ve seen loose-fitting jeans increasing in popularity over the last couple of seasons and it looks like they are about to reach the peak in S/S 2021. Wide-leg jeans were featured on numerous S/S 2021 runways, from Balenciaga and Balmain to Chloe and Paco Rabanne. Some people feel skeptical about the wide-leg denim. And I agree, if you haven’t worn them before, the silhouette might feel intimidating. However, you will be surprised by how versatile and flattering these are! You can style wide-leg jeans with pretty much everything in your closet from everyday tee’s to business shirts, sneakers and high-heels. Furthermore, wide-leg jeans visually lengthen your legs and accentuate your waistline, flattering each and every body type.

4. Comfortable Footwear

If there is one 2021 fashion trend that I am particularly thankful the pandemic for it is comfortable footwear. Guess, what’s about to become the trendiest footwear in 2021? It’s house slippers! Believe it or not, in 2021, we are about to wear slippers everywhere, not just at home. Slippers have pretty much taken over the S/S 2021 runways. Brands such as Balenciaga, Givenchy, Rosetta Getty, Gabriella Hearst and Proenza Schouler have all shown us that it’s cool to wear slippers outdoors! Particularly popular this season will be the slippers with indoor-outdoor wearability. Just imagine slipping your feet into a pair of cozy slides or loafers before going about your day? Actually, a lot of slippers this season were designed specifically to be worn outdoors. Take, for example, Friulane Textured-Leather Slippers from The Row. These feature rubber soles with slender heels, perfect to be worn both indoors and outdoors!

5. Investment Jewelry

If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you must already know how I feel about designer costume jewelry. In short: I think it is not worth it. Costume jewelry is made of cheap, non-precious metals. Of course, some of it is very pretty. But, these pieces aren’t made to last. And that’s my major problem with costume jewelry. If you are going to spend $500+ on a pair of earrings, they must be quality. I’ve always been a fan of fine jewelry and investment jewelry in general and you can imagine how excited I was to learn that in S/S 2021, it’s gonna be the major trend. In Spring/Summer 2021, jewelry is now about the investment, longevity, forever pieces. From dainty gold chains to elegant tennis bracelets, this season it’s time to get classy!

These are my top 5 favorite fashion trends of S/S 2021. Would you consider adding these to your closet? Let me know in the comments below!
