Fall Capsule Wardrobe 2023: 13 Essentials, Countless Looks
Coats, jackets, luxurious layers – there’s no doubt that fall is one of the most exciting seasons for fashion. But unfortunately, it also happens to be one of the most expensive seasons to shop for. And that’s exactly why I’ve always liked the idea of a fall capsule wardrobe. By investing into a few key pieces that can be mixed and matched, you can create a variety of looks year after year without breaking the bank or cluttering your closet. 1. White T-shirt
When it comes to style staples, a white t-shirt is top of the list. Not only is a white tee incredibly versatile, but it’s also the perfect foundation for any look. I’m imagining a slouchy tee, blue wash denim and a trench for your off-duty days. For a style switch-up, layer your t-shirt under an oversized blazer and top the look off with a mini skirt and cowboy boots.
2. Long-sleeved Top
Layering is synonymous with fall fashion and what better place to start than with a long-sleeved top? A classic crew neck top is always a solid style option as its simple design pairs well with just about everything is one’s wardrobe. Wear it as is, or layer it under a cardigan, styling options here are truly endless. As for colors, I recommend looking for neutral colorways that will easily go with your existing wardrobe.
3. Turtleneck
Hands down one of my favorite fall wardrobe essentials has to be the turtleneck. It is just so powerful and perfect for layering. If you’re heading on a night out, style a black turtleneck jumper with a black mini skirt, leather-look blazer and a pair of knee-high boots. For days spent at your desk, pair your turtleneck with a denim maxi skirt and a cross-body bag.
4. Cashmere Cardigan
A French-girl must-have piece is a classic cashmere cardigan. No matter if you leave yours unbuttoned and slouchy or buttoned and preppy, their versatility makes them an essential with endless style. For days spent running errands, you can simply pair your cardigan with a tonal tank top and baggy denim. Or for something a little more sultry, strategically do up one or two buttons and leave a little skin on show.
5. Black Hoodie
Whether you’re kicking back on the weekends or running errands around town, a black hoodie will always be your best friend. If your agenda includes kicking back on the couch, make sure you have the uniform to match. I’m talking about pairing your black hoodie with a pair of matching joggers or cycling shorts for extreme comfort. Or if you’re looking for serious street style, go for a plain hoodie and trench coat combo – top it off with light-wash denim and a pair of sneakers.
6. Straight-leg Denim
No fall capsule wardrobe is complete without a pair of straight-leg jeans. The reason? They are classic, versatile and look flattering on everyone (unlike the skinny jeans). This fall, style your straight-leg jeans with a white tee, oversized blazer and a pair of sneakers for a polished, but casual look, or dress them up with a sleek turtleneck and a pair of loafers.
7. Faux-leather Leggings
Leather-looking leggings are a luxurious layer for your fall capsule wardrobe. Not only do they look expensive, but their smooth texture also adds immediate interest to an outfit. If you’re into your tonal colorways, think about a pair of brown faux-leather leggings matched with a slouchy beige roll-neck jumper. Or for a minimalist moment, slip on a pair of black leather leggings, a black turtleneck and a longline camel coat.
8. Trench Coat
A trench coat is quite possibly the ultimate “It-Girl” uniform piece. The effortless Parisian-style piece was made famous by the British brand Burberry and is now one of the most-seen outerwear pieces at fashion weeks around the globe. For a truly transitional wardrobe, I’d recommend investing in a classic beige trench with a trusty belt for cinching in your waistline.
9. Camel Wool Coat
The sophisticated structure of a camel wool coat makes it a staple for transitional styling, as does its insulating material. As a universally adored outerwear piece, these coats are a dream to style and can be paired with basically anything. One of my favorite fits pairs a longline camel coat with cropped blue denim, a plain white long-sleeved tee and a pair of loafers.
10. Loafers
Talking about loafers. Where footwear trends come and go, loafers forever remain in style. And it’s no wonder, as they’re comfy, chic and perfect to pair with anything from jeans to dresses. 11. Heeled Ankle Booties
A good pair of heeled ankle booties will be your hardest-working footwear this fall. I just love how formal, but at the same time casual, block-heeled ankle booties look when styled with denim. However, if you’re after something more elegant, go for the kitten heel. Kitten-heeled ankle booties will serve as a comfortable alternative to stiletto-heeled ankle boots as the sole balances out their height.
12. White Sneakers
A good pair of white sneakers is essential for any season, not just fall. But I thought I’d still mention them here.
