Breaking News: Louis Vuitton’s Classic Speedy Discontinued

If there is one bag in this world that I was confident would never be discontinued, it’s the classic Louis Vuitton Speedy. Introduced by Louis Vuitton in 1930, it’s one of those iconic styles that instantly comes to one’s mind when thinking of luxury handbags. Not even to mention that it’s one of the most iconic designs from Louis Vuitton and the bag many of us, handbag lovers, have started their collections with (me included). But well, I guess the time has come to say goodbye to the Speedy. That’s right, after numerous decades in production, the classic version of the Louis Vuitton Speedy bag is being discontinued. And I am here to bring you all the details!

How did I learn about this?

The rumors about the original Speedy bag being discontinued have been circulating online for quite some time now. Basically, right from the moment, Louis Vuitton introduced the Bandouliere (version of the bag with the shoulder strap) in 2011. However, everyone started to get seriously worried around 2020, when Louis Vuitton discontinued the Speedy 40 – the largest size of the bag. That has left a lot of Speedy lovers wondering if other sizes will follow suit. And they did. In the summer of 2023, the news came about the brand discontinuing the classic Speedy 35 in all three canvas prints. Then, fast-forward to April 2024, I personally hear from my Louis Vuitton SA that all versions of the classic style of the Speedy are “no longer being crafted by Louis Vuitton ateliers”, a.k.a. are no longer being produced. The news has obviously left me in shock. I mean, the Speedy is such a classic bag for LV! So, I instantly went to check on LV’s website, to only discover that all versions of the bag are listed as “item unavailable”. Not even to mention that the bag is gone entirely from Louis Vuitton’s website for France and many other countries.

Alleged reason for the classic version of the Louis Vuitton Speedy being discontinued

The classic Louis Vuitton Speedy bag was envisioned as the ideal companion for city life. Originally released in the 1930s under the name “Express”, which was a reference to the era’s rapid transit, every feature of the Speedy is iconic, from its instantly-recognizable silhouette to the rolled leather top handles. However, not everyone wants to carry their handbags by hand. And especially these days when versatility is everything. Hence, why Louis Vuitton introduced the Speedy Bandouliere in 2011.

While basically identical in design to the classic Speedy, the Speedy Bandouliere offered several design upgrades, incl. the addition of a removable shoulder strap, which allowed for the bag to also be worn on the shoulder and crossbody, in addition to the standard handheld option. Thus, the Speedy Bandouliere catered not just to those who wanted the convenience of the shoulder strap, but also to the lovers of the classic Speedy with the possibility to wear it handheld. According to my sources at LV, this is also the alleged reason for phasing out the classic version of the bag.

Louis Vuitton Speedy Over The Years

However, it’s not like the Bandouliere is the only version of the Speedy bag out there. In fact, over the years, the classic style has been re-imagined countless times. Think the iconic Multicolor and Cherry Speedy’s designed in collaboration with Takashi Murakami, or the Graffiti Speedy, released in collaboration with Stephen Sprouse. I mean, even Pharell Williams has recently released his reinterpretations of the bag, with some options sold at exorbitant price tags.

So, I think it’s safe to expect the classic Speedy to come back at some point. Perhaps in the form of a limited edition, or a slightly redesigned version with a higher price tag (which we’ve seen Louis Vuitton do in the past). But nevertheless, I will personally really miss the classic version of the Speedy in Monogram canvas. It’s just one of those bags that I will forever associate with Louis Vuitton! How about you? Will you miss the classic Speedy, or is the Bandouliere is just as fine for you? Let’s chat in the comments below!
