Debuted back in February 1955, the Chanel 2.55 has revolutionized the fashion industry. At that time, upper class women used to wear predominantly hand-carried bags, which was extremely inconvenient. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel designed her first bag back in 1929 and it was, actually, a hand-carried bag. However, as majority of luxury fashion lovers know: Coco Chanel liked to defy the norms, especially, in her early days. According to Coco Chanel, over the years, she was fed up with holding her purses in her hands and losing them, so she decided to add a strap to carry them over the shoulder. This is how the Chanel 2.55 bag was born. Today, we know the Chanel 2.55 bag as one of the most important accessories in the history of fashion.
The name of the bag, 2.55, represents the month and year of its introduction. February 2005 marked the 50th year anniversary since the creation of the 2.55 bag. Furthermore, in honor of that, in 2005 Karl Lagerfeld has introduced the Reissue 2.55 which was an exact recreation of the original 2.55 with the Mademoiselle lock and all chain strap. The legendary bag has made a comeback!
Undeniably, the Chanel Reissue 2.55 is a house icon and a must-have for every serious Chanel collector. Limited edition Reissue 2.55 bags are always quite difficult to come by. They are highly sought-after and are considered great investments, since they hold their value pretty well, sometimes even selling for a premium on the resale market.
Bags from Chanel’s Metiers d’Art 2020 (20A) Collection are absolutely stunning. However, the bag that stands out most from the entire collection is the Reissue 2.55 bag in a gorgeous “rainbow” style. The bag is crafted in diamond quilted metallic goatskin with the multicolor finish. It’s like from a fairytale, with colors transitioning from gold to pink, purple, green and blue. Talking about the color: the color combination on each of these Reissue bags will play out differently, so each bag is unique. Moreover, the colors always change depending on the lighting.
It’s already certain that the Metiers d’Art 20A Metallic Goatskin Reissue 2.55 bag is a limited edition style. So, it is likely that we won’t see it in stock next season. Actually, I’ve checked with my local Chanel boutique few days after the collection has launched and guess what?! The 20A “Rainbow” Reissue 2.55 has already sold out. To be honest, that’s what I’ve expected. This particular Metiers d’Art Collection was all over the social media and a lot of people had their eyes on this particular item. So, it’s no surprise, that it’s already quite difficult to locate the “Rainbow” 2.55 bag in Chanel boutiques.
The good news is that the “Rainbow” Reissue 2.55 Bag comes in several variations. The one that is most difficult to locate is the “Rainbow” Reissue 2.55 bag in the original size. Apart from that, the bag also comes in a Mini size and a Wallet on Chain style. The Mini is also quite popular at the moment. Not all boutiques have it in stock, but it’s way easier to find than the larger size.
