The New Creative Director of Chanel

Matthieu Blazy To Join Chanel

The most prestigious job in the fashion industry has been filled: following Virginie Viard’s sudden departure from Chanel back in June, the iconic French Fashion House has named Matthieu Blazy as its new creative director!

The news came just hours after it was announced that the designer will be leaving Bottega Veneta, where he held the creative director role for the past three years.

“I am delighted to welcome Matthieu Blazy,” said the president of Chanel Fashion and Chanel SAS Bruno Pavlovsky, in an official press statement. “I am convinced that he will be able to play with the codes and heritage of the House, through an ongoing dialogue with the Studio, our Ateliers, and our Maisons d’art. His audacious personality, his innovative and powerful approach to Creation, as well as his dedication to craftsmanship and beautiful materials, will take Chanel in exciting new directions.”

Blazy has also since issued a press statement saying: “I am thrilled and honored to join the wonderful House of Chanel. I look forward to meeting all the teams and writing this new chapter together”. And we’re certainly excited to see on what’s to come for the brand, as during his tenure at Bottega Veneta, the designer developed quite a few incredible pieces, such as leather jeans and tank tops, as well as the top-selling Bottega Veneta Hop and Andiamo bags.

It’s also important to note that under Blazy’s tenure, Bottega Veneta’s sales were consistently up, outperforming the rest of Kering brands. And I think we can all agree that this is rather substantial. Especially when taking into account the current state of luxury, where sales numbers are down across most brands in the industry.

Chanel, though, is one notable exception from this, as the brand’s sales have consistently been growing despite the overall industry slowdown. Will this continue under Matthieu Blazy’s tenure? Well, time will tell. Btw, the designer is expected to start working for Chanel in Spring 2025, with his first collection unveiled in the coming October.
