Is the Chanel 19 Bag Slowly Going Away?
When Chanel first released their 19 Bag, it seemed like everyone wanted to own one. Fashion editors, bloggers, influencers; everyone was trying to get their hands on the latest size or color. The Caramel 19, in particular, became the ultimate status symbol, nearly impossible to score in-store (unless you were a VIC, or had a very good relationship with your SA). Hence the reason resellers charged insane markups — and we paid. I guess we all wanted to own the hottest “it-bag”!
Fast forward five years, and the landscape looks very different. The same Chanel 19 styles that once commanded premiums are now widely available on resale platforms — often priced well below retail. The urgency is gone. The exclusivity feels diluted. So what changed? Has the hype cycle simply run its course, or is the Chanel 19 quietly fading from fashion’s spotlight? Let’s chat.
The Rise of Chanel 19
Unveiled in March 2019 during Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2019 runway, the Chanel 19 Bag quickly became one of the most talked-about handbag launches of the decade. Designed by Karl Lagerfeld alongside Virginie Viard, who has ended up taking over the creative reins of the brand after the legendary designer’s death up until she left in 2025, the 19 bag paid homage to Chanel’s classic 2.55 Bag, which was famously created by Coco Chanel in February of 1955.
Though the 19 was an obvious departure from the 2.55, which was your traditional, classy shoulder bag, while the 19 Bag stood out with its oversized diamond quilting, a soft, slouchy silhouette, and a chunky mixed-metal chain, which gave the bag a very contemporary, modern appearance.
Actually, the mixed-metal strap is also what made a lot of people instantly fall in love with this handbag. I mean, you no longer had to think about which color jewelry to wear, as the chunky chain strap on the bag combined multiple metals — aged-gold, silver, and ruthenium — thus, making it incredibly easy to style.
The 19 Bag was also Karl Lagerfeld’s last major design for Chanel, which made it feel extra special. And the reason why many people thought the bag would stick around.
The Imminent Downfall
But unfortunately, five years later, the Chanel 19 doesn’t carry the same cultural weight. And there are two main reasons for that.
The first one is shifting trends. The oversized, ultra-soft aesthetic that dominated around 2019–2021 slowly gave way to cleaner, more structured silhouettes. Quiet luxury started trending. Minimalism resurfaced. The slouchy, chunky-chain look that once felt bold now feels distinctly tied to a specific era.
Then, the second, and in my opinion, the most important reason for the decreased interest towards the 19 Bag nowadays is the fact that recently Chanel has been introducing quite a few new bags that redirected attention from the 19 to other styles.
The launch of the Chanel 22 Bag in particular, has garnered lots of hype. Not to even mention that with its lightweight construction, bold logo detailing, and easy everyday functionality, the 22 Bag appealed strongly to the same audience that once obsessed over the 19 — but in a more current way. And now, the Chanel 25 Bag is taking over all the spotlight, offering a more refined silhouette that aligns perfectly with the ongoing trend for hobo bags.
Is The Chanel 19 Bag Going To Be Discontinued?
This is the question many collectors are quietly asking.
A few years ago, Chanel discontinued the Chanel Gabrielle — another bag that once had serious momentum. The Gabrielle also benefited from strong influencer backing and multiple size variations. Yet, despite its initial popularity, it eventually faded from boutique shelves.
Could the Chanel 19 have the same faith?
It’s possible. Though it’s important to note that unlike the Gabrielle Bag, the Chanel 19 carries the emotional weight of being associated with Karl Lagerfeld’s final years at Chanel, giving the bag a certain level of archival significance and the reason why I personally think they are going to be trying to hold on to the design for as long as possible.
However, Chanel is also known for quietly phasing out designs without major announcements. And it really does seem that they’ve started slowing down the production of the 19, as no new seasonal variations of the bag have been released with the new 26S collection. In fact, right now, the bag only seems to be available in two classic options (black or white lambskin). Size-wise, there’s currently small, large and maxi.
Could this be the sign that Chanel has made the decision to start phasing out the 19 Bag? It sure can be. And I am certainly going to pay attention to the bag next time I go to the boutique. Because you know the drill: once boutiques start limiting the availability, discontinuation is likely to follow. And if it’s actually the case, I am personally gonna be very sad. In my opinion, the Chanel 19 is a much better bag than the 22.
But what do you think? Are you still wearing your 19 bags? Let’s chat in the comments!
