12 Best French Handbag Brands: Top Houses You Should Know
For a designer handbag lover, shopping for new bag almost feels like a sacred ritual. And especially if on the tag of the bag it says “Made in France”.
Renowned for its rich history of artisanal excellence, France has long been the ultimate destination for luxury handbags. I mean, some of the world’s most recognizable designs originated exactly from French Fashion Houses: the Hermès Birkin, Chanel’s 2.55, the Louis Vuitton Speedy, Dior’s Lady Dior, you name it!
But the truth is that French handbag design extends much beyond the traditional luxury giants. Contemporary brands such as Polène and RSVP Paris, for example, have recently built a following around sculptural shapes and understated branding, while Longchamp has turned a simple nylon tote into a true global icon.
So, which French handbag brands are worth knowing about?
I’ve narrowed the list down to 12 names that stand out for their heritage, craftsmanship and design identity. From timeless elegance of Chanel to contemporary appeal of RSVP Paris, these are the best French handbag brands to have on your radar in 2026.

1. Chanel
Opening up the list of the best French handbag brands with none other than Chanel. Founded in 1910 by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel, this iconic French Fashion House has revolutionized the handbag industry by introducing the shoulder strap together with the launch of their 2.55 bag in 1955.
As the story goes, in the 1920s, Coco Chanel got tired of having to carry her handbags by hand and decided to design a handbag which could be worn over the shoulder. And she succeeded, designing the handbag that we now know as the Chanel 2.55.
In the 1980s, Karl Lagerfeld reinterpreted this design with the interlocking CC turn-lock, creating the the Classic Flap, or the 11.12. Sadly, it now starts at €10,100. Though if you’re after the iconic French luxury, Chanel, without a doubt, remains as the top brand to consider.

2. Louis Vuitton
When talking about the most iconic French handbag brands, a name that instantly comes to mind is Louis Vuitton. Established in 1854 by, at the time, young and ambitious Louis Vuitton, Louis Vuitton has initially risen to fame thanks to its luxury trunks and luggage featuring a distinctive LV monogram pattern.
Today, however, the brand is best known for its bags. In particular, the Keepall, the Speedy and, of course, the Neverfull, which was introduced in 2007 and has grown to be one of the most popular French designer handbags on the market. In fact, you now have to join a waitlist, which is around 2-3 months long, to buy one directly from the boutique!

3. Hermès
Started out in 1837 as a harness workshop in Paris, over a span of nearly two centuries Hermès has gone on to become one of the most celebrated French handbag brands in the world, renowned globally for its impeccable craftsmanship, and, of course, the iconic Birkin and Kelly bags.
If you are into handbags, you’ve likely heard of the Hermès game. A jargon among Hermès aficionados, this commonly refers to the amount you have to pre-spend at Hermès in order to be offered a chance to buy a quota bag (Birkin, or Kelly). Yes, you can’t really buy any of those bags by simply walking into a Hermès store. Which is also, in my opinion, a big part of the appeal.

4. Celine
Celine is a French luxury fashion powerhouse established in 1945 by Céline Vipiana and her husband, Richard. The brand initially gained recognition as a made-to-measure children’s shoe business, but in the early 60s, the focus was shifted to ready-to-wear fashion, shoes and accessories, which remain the main focus of the brand to this day.
Most of us, however, consider Celine’s most influential period to be under Phoebe Philo, whose minimalist aesthetic turned handbags such as the Luggage Tote, Classic Box Bag and Belt Bag into true contemporary classics.
The Celine Classic Box Bag, unfortunately, is no longer in production. Though it has been replaced by the new Triomphe Bag, which offers a very similar silhouette with a flap-style closure and the long shoulder strap.
5. Goyard
Likely, no other French handbag brand evokes as much mystery and prestige as Goyard. Founded in 1853 as a continuation of “Maison Martin”, a trunk-making business founded by Pierre-Francois Martin in 1792, Goyard is renowned for its extraordinary craftsmanship, as well as a somewhat old-school approach towards luxury: the brand till this day doesn’t sell online, nor advertise.
That didn’t deter them, however, from becoming one of the most popular French handbag brands on the planet. Goyard’s Saint Louis Tote, in particular, has gone on to become an iconic symbol in the world of luxury fashion, often reselling for well over retail through the pre-loved market.

6. Moynat
Moynat is a French leather goods brand that was established in 1849 by Octavia & Francois Coulembier, making it the oldest French trunk maker. Though, after a period of decline, the brand was forced to close its original boutique in 1976, remaining relatively dormant until LVMH, under the leadership of Bernard Arnault, revived it in 2011.
And it’s very good that they did, as Moynat has a rich history of crafting luxurious, bespoke trunks and leather goods. I mean, just look at their stunning Gabrielle Bag!
If you appreciate heritage and craftsmanship but don’t necessarily want to carry one of the most recognizable logos in luxury fashion, Moynat is one of the best French handbag brands to consider.

7. Dior
It’s difficult to discuss iconic French handbags without mentioning Dior.
Founded in 1947 by Christian Dior, the brand’s first collection featured the revolutionary “New Look,” which marked a departure from wartime austerity to full skirts, nipped-in waists, and femininity in general.
Today, however, fashion lovers from all around the world best know Dior for its iconic Lady Dior. A favorite of none other than Princess Diana, the Lady Dior bag was created in 1995 and features a distinctive quilted pattern called Cannage, inspired by the Napoleon III chairs that Christian Dior used in his first fashion show in 1947.

Founded by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé in Paris in 1961, Saint Laurent became known for challenging traditional ideas of women’s fashion. And that rebellious spirit continues in its accessories.
From the YSL monogram and distinctive gold-tone hardware to structured silhouettes and sleek leather designs, Saint Laurent handbags have a polished look with just enough attitude. The brand’s collection ranges from everyday crossbody bags like the Lou Camera Bag to more structured styles such as the Sac de Jour, giving it a particularly strong mix of practicality and Parisian sophistication.

Chloé initially disrupted the fashion landscape by introducing the concept of luxury clothing ready to be worn off the rack. However, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that they transformed into a top handbag brand. And you’ve guessed it, it happened thanks to Phoebe Philo!
Much like Celine, under the creative direction of Phoebe Philo, Chloé experienced an upward trajectory. Philo introduced a number of iconic styles, incl. the now-legendary Chloé Paddington bag, which quickly became a sensation thanks to its slouchy silhouette and a distinctive oversized padlock. 10. Longchamp
Longchamp proves that a handbag doesn’t need a four-figure price tag to become iconic.
Founded in Paris in 1948, the brand initially specialized in leather-covered smoking accessories before expanding into leather goods and handbags. Though true success only came to the brand in 1993 when they released the now iconic Le Pliage.
An iconic design in the world of luxury, the Longchamp Le Pliage is a foldable and lightweight nylon tote which carries far more than its compact appearance suggests. That’s why you see it everywhere from university campuses to airports and city streets. But well, at just a little over €100 retail, it’s definitely a great buy (I own two!).
11. Polène
Founded in Paris in 2016, Polène is the youngest brand on this list—and, in my opinion, one of the most interesting.
The brand has built its identity around sculptural shapes, understated branding and relatively accessible prices. Basically, rather than relying on a prominent logo, Polène lets the silhouette of each handbag do the talking.
I own two Polène bags myself—the Numéro Un Nano in black textured leather and the Numéro Huit Mini in camel (now discontinued)—and what I particularly appreciate is the attention given to shape and construction. I therefore highly recommend Polène for anyone looking for contemporary French design without stepping into Chanel or Hermès-level prices.

12. RSVP Paris
If you haven’t heard of RSVP Paris yet, let me fill you in. Founded in Paris in 2015, the contemporary leather-goods house is one of the more under-the-radar names on this list.
RSVP takes a distinctly modern approach to French leather craftsmanship, combining understated Parisian design with vintage-inspired details. Its handbags are designed in Paris and crafted in France or Italy, depending on the model and leather, using materials sourced from European tanneries.
What makes the brand particularly interesting is its approach to production. Each handbag is limited to 500 numbered pieces, with the number reflecting its place in the production run.

French Handbag Brands vs. Bags Made in France
One detail is easy to overlook when shopping for a French handbag: French brand does not automatically mean Made in France.
A Maison can be French in terms of its history, design and identity while manufacturing its handbags elsewhere in Europe.
Polène, for example, designs its leather goods in Paris but produces them in Spain. Louis Vuitton? Has manufacturing facilities in France, Spain, Italy and the USA (learn more in my dedicated article on where are Louis Vuitton bags made). Dior is another example: the Lady Dior is made in Italy despite Dior being a French fashion house.
This isn’t necessarily a drawback. France, Italy, Spain and the U.S. all have long-established traditions of luxury leather-goods production.
If the country of manufacture matters to you, always check the label or individual product description rather than assuming that a French brand means the bag was made in France.
